Why go to Itoshima

Itoshima is a laid-back coastal area just outside Fukuoka city, known for beaches, cafés and local produce. It is one of the easiest ways to see rural Kyushu in a single day.

Getting there

  • This is a road-trip plan: rent a car near Hakata Station (an international driving permit is required for most visitors).
  • From Hakata: about 40 minutes to 1 hour by car to the Itoshima coast.
  • Fukuoka Airport is only a few subway stops from Hakata Station.

Tips for avoiding the crowds

  • The coast is busiest on summer weekends; weekdays and the off-season are much calmer.
  • Parking near popular cafés fills up around lunchtime, so visit them before noon.
  • Remember that Japan drives on the left.

House rules for this trip

Little challenges to share with your group. Every Tabishiori itinerary has three.

  • ① Everyone brings a snack for the driver.
  • ② At the seaside café, each person orders a different drink.
