Why go to Kanazawa

Kanazawa keeps much of its Edo-period townscape: geisha teahouse streets, samurai residences and one of Japan's three great gardens. It is far quieter than Kyoto while offering a similar atmosphere.

Getting there

  • From Tokyo: about 2.5 to 3 hours on the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa Station.
  • From Osaka / Kyoto: about 2 to 2.5 hours by Limited Express Thunderbird and the Hokuriku Shinkansen (change at Tsuruga).
  • Around town: the sights are within walking distance or a short city bus ride from Kanazawa Station.

Tips for avoiding the crowds

  • Visit Higashi Chaya District before late morning or toward evening; it is busiest around midday.
  • Kenrokuen Garden opens early in the morning, so it is easiest to enjoy at the start of the day.
  • Omicho Market is liveliest at lunchtime; arriving before noon means shorter lines.

House rules for this trip

Little challenges to share with your group. Every Tabishiori itinerary has three.

  • ① At Omicho Market, everyone picks one dish that catches their eye and shares it.
  • ② In the teahouse district, try one gold-leaf sweet.
  • ③ Take one group photo with everyone at Kenrokuen.
